I know I’m a little late with a New Year post, but school holidays happened (and, if I’m honest, so did a fair amount of lying on the sofa, necking selection box choccies and watching films with the boys). Then last weekend Mr Houses and I had a very lovely couple of nights away just the two of us (thanks Mum!) to the glorious Grantown-on-Spey where we enjoyed a final festive blow out in the heart of whisky country. When I was growing up, we had sets of crockery, cutlery and glassware kept for “best”, stored away in their original packaging, to be unwrapped once a year only on Christmas Eve in preparation for the big day. This was a refection of a more austere age, when anything that wasn’t pyrex was a luxury item and couldn’t possibly be subjected to the rigours of everyday family life.
